Though the land was occupied since around 1400 B.C., Broward County got founded Oct. 1, 1915. It got its name from Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, who was the Governor of Florida 1905-1909, as he is remembered due to his campaign to make the Everglades into “useful land.” Originally, it was supposed to have the name of Everglades County, but the then-Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives Ion Farris revised the bill which established the county to be called Broward.
