There are 31 municipalities in the country (to include 24 incorporated cities) and a lot of unincorporated areas. Also it is Florida’s 7th biggest county in terms of land space, with 1,322.8 square miles. Broward County’s urbanized area fills 427.8 square miles of land. The biggest part of the county is the Conservation Area which goes clear to the county’s Western border. The conservation area consists of 796.9 square miles and includes the wetlands. Though the land was occupied since around 1400 B.C., Broward County got founded Oct. 1, 1915. It got its name from Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, who was the Governor of Florida 1905-1909, as he is remembered due to his campaign to make the Everglades into “useful land.” Originally, it was supposed to have the name of Everglades County, but the then-Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives Ion Farris revised the bill which established the county to be called Broward.
