About the County / Desoto County Inmate Search
Desoto County was at one time home to the Calusa Indians. Ponce De Leon, the Spanish explorer, encountered the Calusa Indians in 1513. A fight took place, leaving casualties on both sides. Later the Calusa Indians injured De Leon after he attempted to form a colony in their area.
Not long after, he died. Other explorers arrived in 1528 and captured several of the Indians. The Indians told them of gold in the North and offered to guide them.
In 1539, Spanish Explorer Hernando Desoto came upon the land from the Charlotte Harbor and started exploring. He later moved on to explore other parts of the area. Desoto County officially became a county in 1887. The county helped train American and British pilots in World War I at Carlstrom Field Air Base.
In 2004, Hurricane Charley destroyed many of the structures in the area, which remained in the county for approximately an hour before moving on.
