About Holmes County, FL

Holmes County is located in the northwestern part of the state with its county seat being located in Bonifay. Created in 1848, the namesake of the county continues to be a point of contention. It might be named after Thomas J. Holmes who was the first English settler of the land, or it is named after an Indian chief Holmes who’s tribe settled the area in 1814. The chief was killed 4 years later by Andrew Jackson.
