The Indian River County Jail is run by the Corrections Operations section of the local sheriff’s office. Alongside officers, civilian positions within the facility include those involving warehousing, medical/nursing positions, the canteen, records, classification, specialty programs, chaplaincy, and mental health. Visitation Hours / Indian River County Inmate Search
Visitations at the jail occur through the video visitation system. Visitors must register themselves and be approved on the Smart Jail Mail system here. Registration requires a valid photo I.D. and credentials such as name, address, date of birth, and relationship to the inmate. A registered user may schedule a visit through the Smart Jail Mail system no further than three (3) days in advance. However, before scheduling a jail visit, it is advisable to first confirm the inmate’s presence at the facility by conducting an Indian River County inmate search here. Visits are held at the on-site visitation center or off-site via the visitor’s device, webcam, and microphone.
On-site visiting hours are 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and 6:30 p.m.to 10:00 p.m. Off-site visiting hours (via home computer, smartphone, or tablet) are 8:00 a.m. to 10:29 a.m., 11:00 a.m. to 5:29 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. to 10:44 p.m. Visitations last 30 minutes each. Each inmate can be scheduled for a maximum of four visits a week and one visit per day.

Before 1821, the area was part of the Spanish colony of East Florida. In 1822, it became part of St. Johns County, then part of Mosquito County (the original name of Orange County) in 1824. Twenty years later, in 1844, the area became part of the new St. Lucia County. Finally, in 1925, the county was formed out of a northern portion of St. Lucie County and named for the Indian River flowing through it.
