The Indian River County Jail is run by the Corrections Operations section of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office. Alongside officers, civilian positions within the facility include those involving warehousing, medical/nursing positions, the canteen, records, classification, specialty programs, chaplaincy, and mental health. The facility’s inmate programs include Life Skills, Parenting Classes, G.E.D. classes, a Re-Entry Program, Alcoholics Anonymous, and Narcotic Anonymous programs.

Indian River County Jail Visitation Hours

Visitations at the Indian River County Jail occur through the Video Visitation System. Visitors must register themselves and be approved on the Smart Jail Mail system at https://www.smartjailmail.com. Registration requires a valid photo I.D. and credentials such as name, address, date of birth, and relationship to the inmate. A registered user may schedule a visit through the Smart Jail Mail system no further than three (3) days in advance. 

Visits are held at the on-site visitation center or off-site via the visitor’s device, webcam, and microphone. 

On-site visiting hours are 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM, and 6:30 PM to 10:00 PM. Off-site visiting hours (via home computer, smartphone, or tablet) are 8:00 AM to 10:29 AM, 11:00 AM to 5:29 PM, and 6:30 PM to 10:44 PM. Visitations last thirty (30) minutes each. Each inmate can be scheduled for a maximum of four (4) visits a week and one visit per day.

Indian River County Sheriff 

Sheriff Eric Flowers is the 11th and current Indian River County Sheriff. He holds a B.A. in Business Administration from Stetson University and an M.S. in Criminal Justice from the University of Central Florida. He has served in various positions for over 17 years at the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

Indian River County is located in the Treasure Coast region of Florida. In 2000, it was the 87th wealthiest county in the U.S. by per capita income. Before 1821, the area was part of the Spanish colony of East Florida. In 1822, it became part of St. Johns County, then part of Mosquito County (the original name of Orange County) in 1824. Twenty years later, in 1844, the area became part of the new St. Lucia County. Finally, in 1925, Indian River County was formed out of a northern portion of St. Lucie County and named for the Indian River flowing through it.

The population was 73.49% White, 8.19% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American or Alaska Native, 1.47% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.46% Some Other Race, 3.17% Mixed/Multi-Racial, and 13.04% Hispanic or Latino.
