Jefferson County Jail Visitation Hours

Jefferson County Sheriff

Sheriff Alfred Kenneth “Mac” McNeill Jr. is the Jefferson County sheriff. He went to Santa Fe Community college to earn his Bachelor’s Degree. In 1990 he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the first Gulf War. His law enforcement career has included being a deputy at the Alachua County Sheriff’s office, a supervisor for the governor’s protection detail with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for 13 years, and eventually becoming Jefferson County sheriff by appointment and later reelection.

Jefferson County is known as the “keystone county” in Florida. It is located in the Panhandle of the state about halfway between Jacksonville and Pensacola. The county seat resides in Monticello. In contrast to the well-known tourist beaches of Florida, Jefferson County has acres of wooded areas and rolling hills. It is especially attractive for post-retirement citizens thanks to its low crime rate and low taxes.

The racial breakdown of the county is as follows: 60.1% White, 31.7% Black, 4.53% Hispanic, 2.79% mixed, 0.87% other. The age brackets of the county are 18.6% under 18, 8.2% from 18-24, 25% 25-44, 32.3% 45-64, and 16.5% above 65 years old. The average household size was 2.38 people.

In 2000, the median income for a household in Jefferson county was $32,998. The per capita income was $17,006 and 13.3% of families were living in poverty. In addition, 17.1% of the total population in the county was living below the poverty line.
