Martin County is in the Treasure Coast region of Florida. The population was 158,431 as of the 2020 US Census. Stuart is the county seat. Martin County is located in the Port St. Lucie, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1925, Martin County was developed with the northern portion being from St. Lucie County and the southern part being from Palm Beach County.

County History

Martin County is named in honor of John W. Martin, the Governor of Florida from 1925 to 1929. Martin County is a non-chartered county. Its form of government is stipulated via Florida’s Constitution and Statutes.

When the county was formed, the western shape followed along the Lake Okeechobee shoreline, as also did Glades, Okeechobee, and Hendry counties borders. Palm Beach County had traditionally claimed all the lake’s surface as part of its space, to its advantage for the allocation of state and federal highway funds.

William Ralph Scott of Stuart, the state’s representative started a bill to divide the lake amongst its adjoining counties, producing a more reasonable distribution of state funds for road construction and maintenance. All the bordering counties approved the justice of the change and endorsed its ratification, except for Palm Beach County. Palm Beach County representatives later gave Representative William Scott a container of water, indicating “all of the water Bill Scott left Palm Beach County.” The container is in the custody of Stuart Heritage.
